PROPERTY LEGACY

Our property has a history of brewing libations. From the 1870’s until the 1950’s hop growing was a major industry throughout Mendocino. The hop kiln was used to dry and bale the hops before shipping them worldwide for beer brewing. Today, this historic property is the region’s oldest operating winery offering fine, hand-crafted wines.

You can see our current winemaking activities, and of course, see where hops were originally processed. The drying building of the hop kiln now houses our tank room filled with gleaming stainless-steel tanks used for fermentation and storage. The hop kiln’s original storage room is now the tasting room and one floor below is the barrel room where the wines age in French oak barrels.
Deanna & Ted Starr
OUR PASSION

The winery is owned by Ted and Deanna Starr having acquired the winery in 2001. Winemaker Deanna continues to make wine using traditional methods  and the artistry of winemaking.

As an accomplished cook, Deanna often  talks about the similarities of cooking and winemaking.

Deanna is also a Registered Nurse and is convinced that there is not a huge difference between caring for barrels and caring for patients!

Deanna and her  husband Ted share a passion for good wine, satisfying food, lively conversation, and the beauty of Mendocino County.
VARIETALS

Selecting the finest grapes from local vineyards, Deanna produces handcrafted, limited bottlings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Carignane, Valdiguie, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Dessert Wines and Port. Plus, our giggle series including Big Ass Red, Big Ass Blonde and Sunshine.

Milano’s boutique winery has the ability to pamper each individual barrel to bring out the best of each wine. We invite you to visit our tasting room and share these and other rare bottlings from our Cellar.

"Milano Winery is my go to favorite. An extensive variety of wines in a unique location up a long lane to an old redwood
building. A lovely place to take a picnic, enjoy close up the collection of animals, the most unusual being a tortoise."
